Human ecology, defined as ‘the study of the form and the development of the community in human populations’ (Hawley 1950, p. 68, Hawley 1971) for which the unit of analysis ‘is not the individual but the aggregate which is either organized or in the process of being organized’ (Hawley 1950, p. 67), has offered valuable insights into demographic phenomena for many years.
