ISO 13849-1:1999 Safety “Category” was defined in ISO 13849-1: 1999. It is classification of the safety-related parts of a control system in respect of their resistance to faults and their subsequent behavior in the fault condition, and which is achieved by the structural arrangement of the parts and/or by their reliability. ISO 13849-1:2006 The European Standard EN ISO 13849-1:2015 has the status of a Swedish Standard. This document contains the official English version of EN ISO 13849-1:2015. This standard supersedes the Swedish Standard SS-EN ISO 13849-1:2008, edition 2 and SS-EN ISO 13849-1:2008 / AC:2009, edition 1. state of an item characterized by the inability to perform a required function, excluding the inability during preventive maintenance or other planned actions, or due to lack of external resources. Note 1 to entry: A fault is often the result of a failure of the item itself, but may exist without prior failure.

The complex mathematical formulas of the system reliability theory were replaced with pre-calculated tables. Some concepts of EN 954 were retained, i.e. categories, redundancy, monitoring. A number were modified, i.e.
